  1. To whom it may concern,

May I ask why a target has been established for the number of close calls raised, especially when all staff members who attended the last two safety workshops (in Guildford and Woking) were told that no such target existed.

I have noticed a target has only appeared this week since no target has been mentioned in any previous ‘Safety Hour’ webpages.

    Many thanks,

    David.

    1. David,
      Thank you for your question.
I would like to answer your questions in three parts.
Firstly. The reason the target has started appearing on the blog is to make it consistent so now all figures (Safety Hour Attendance, Close Calls Raised and Percentage of close calls closed within 90 days) display the actual as well as the target figure.
Secondly. The reason we have a target is because of Bird’s triangle (The Safety Triangle). This says that on average for every Major Accident, there will be a greater number of Minor Accidents followed by a greater number of Near Misses and an even greater number of Unsafe Behaviours. By reducing the number of Unsafe Behaviours by reporting Close Calls the aim is to reduce the number of Major Accidents.
Lastly. The target shown is a route target. The reason that you were told on the safety day that no such target exists is because this target is not passed onto yourselves at DU level.
Hopefully this answers your question. If this does not, please do not hesitate to get in contact again.
